How to clean and re-waterproof your attire.

Adventure is calling but it can get a bit muddy and wet!

Waterproof clothing is an unfortunate year-round necessity in the United Kingdom, but it’s doubly important in winter.

Your waterproof jacket and trousers will protect you from the elements. But there will come a time they will need your attention and a bit of love given back to them to keep them fresh, clean and waterproof. Are your waterproofs actually ready for winter?

I have written a simple, detailed guide on how to look after your waterproofs so they can look after you when you need them. It’s very simple, nature friendly and will restore your waterproofs to that like-new performance.

Let’s start!

STEP 1: Preparation

– Check and empty your pockets! Don’t forget your secret pockets. You might be lucky and find some mementos from your runs!

– Zip the main zipper all the way up.

– Keep any other zipper you can find wide open.

– Spread out your hood.

– Loosen any tightening rubbers or strings.

STEP 2: Washing

To help protect our Marine life and increase the life of your gear I recommend placing your washing into GuppyFriend Microfibre Bag. Guppyfriend is a wash bag that filters out the Microfibres in your synthetic clothing and textiles. Although it is made from 100% Polyamide, this filter bag does not shed any Microfibres itself and is a scientifically approved solution against microplastic pollution from washing. Guppyfriend may just be a measure taken to reduce microplastics polluting our oceans and water system but it is definitely worth using while we deal with the plastic problem.

Now it’s time to add your cleaner. I used GRANGERS PERFORMANCE WASH concentrated wash-in cleaner to make sure my waterproof attire is looking and smelling their best. Simply replace your regular laundry products with a capful of this to remove dirt, dust and other muck. To prepare it for future waterproof treatment.

Remember to follow the washing guidelines that come with your waterproof attire.

STEP 3: Reproofing

Now when your waterproofs are clean and fresh it’s time to give them their new waterproof coat and bring them back to like-new performance.

For ease of use GRANGERS CLOTHING REPEL is your best choice. Simply add two caps to your washing machine and wash the items you wish to proof on a regular cycle.

The last thing you want to worry about when you’re out exploring is the weather. Come rain or shine, you want to know that your gear will keep you protected against the elements. This is why you need Clothing Repel.

STEP 4: Air Dry

Air drying is your best option. Hand it on a coat hanger and let it dry in a well ventilated area. I use a dehumidifier to help dry my clothes efficiently, quickly and with no damage to them.

It can hang near a heater but make sure it’s not touching it.

Tumble dryers? Not the best idea. They can damage your clothing on mid or high settings.

STEP 5: EXPLORE

Your waterproofs are now dry, clean, smell amazing and are taken back to that like-new performance state when you first bought them. They are ready to take on the elements.
